Description:  This program is designed to promote breastfeeding by providing up-to-date information and evidence-based strategies for management of breastfeeding and human lactation. The purpose of the conference is to enhance clinical and leadership knowledge and skills for those working with breastfeeding families.

Objectives:  01. Explain why early puberty or breast growth might be considered risk factors for hormonal problems when looking for clues about low milk production.
  02. Describe approaches and challenges to inducing a milk supply for an adopted child.
  03. Discuss initiatives undertaken by the US Breastfeeding Committee to foster a culturally supportive environment for breastfeeding.
  04. Discuss current American Academy of Pediatrics Guidelines with regard to breastfeeding, hypoglycemia and jaundice.
  05. Explain new technology applications that allow parents to track and record information about their breastfeeding babies.
  06. Discuss ways to talk to mothers about breastfeeding that is encouraging and persuasive without coercion.
  07. Describe ways to facilitate breastfeeding when there is more than one baby.
  08. Explain the rationale for implementing licensure for Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultants.
  09. Describe the rationale for the use of products designed to assist the breastfeeding mother and baby.
  10. Discuss the implications of bariatric surgery, breast reduction for breastfeeding.
  11. Analyze personal attitudes, assumptions and prejudgments that impact the care of breastfeeding families.
  12. Discuss the work-up, differential diagnosis and treatment for breastfeeding-associated pain.
  13. Discuss techniques to overcome obstacles to breastfeeding when a mother is employed.
  14. Analyze U.S. laws that govern breastfeeding in public and workplace pumping.
  15. Provide examples of compliant and non-compliant professional Internet conduct.
