28th Annual Art of Breastfeeding CONFERENCE: Building Confidence and Competence on the Journey

Description:  Participants will gain strategies for management of breastfeeding and human lactation. The conference is designed to enhance clinical and leadership knowledge and skills for those working with breastfeeding families.

Objectives:  1. Discuss breastfeeding’s role in protecting infants from the harmful effects of maternal depression.
  2. Provide tools to help facilitate productive conversations that result in positive solutions and strengthen relationships.
  3. Discuss the risk factors for traumatic birth and the relationship between traumatic birth and breastfeeding.
  4. Discuss clinical examples and resources to promote excellence in the lactation care of gender nonconforming individuals and their families.
  5. Describe Support strategies for feeding preterm infants.
  6. Discuss factors affecting drug concentrations in breast milk as well as strategies on determining if breast milk is safe or unsafe for breastfed infants.
  7. Identify evidence-based community practices to support, protect and promote breastfeeding.
  8. Discuss support of breastfeeding when there are sucking challenges that may impact an infant's ability to transfer milk effectively at the breast.
  9. Identify action steps to improve equity and alleviate disparity in lactation.
