Housing

Housing Availability

The majority of Wake AHEC rotation sites are considered a commutable distance (50 miles or less) from the health science school campuses.  Therefore, housing resources are limited.  For students completing rotations more than 50 miles from campus, housing is available with private homeowners who live in or near the communities where students rotate.  Housing is currently available for ORPCE rotations in or near Cary, Durham, Henderson, Louisburg, Raleigh*, Smithfield, and Warrenton.

 * Travel from Durham to Raleigh or from Chapel Hill to Raleigh is considered a commutable distance and is not eligible for housing placement.

Housing requests must be submitted to the Wake AHEC ORPCE through the Course Director on a completed Primary Care Rotation Form as soon as the rotation is confirmed.

Housing Guidelines

The following guidelines have been established for students requesting housing placement through the ORPCE office at Wake AHEC.

1.  A student may request housing through the Course Director who schedules their rotation if the rotation site is not a commutable driving distance from their school. Wake AHEC/ORPCE defines a commutable driving distance as 50 miles in traveling distance one-way to or from the rotation site.

2.  Every effort is made by the ORPCE staff to place the student in housing that is closest to the rotation site. In some instances, it may be necessary to place a student in the next closest available housing site. Should this occur, the housing site will still be a commutable driving distance as defined above.

3.  ORPCE will send the student a housing information packet, either by email or U.S. Postal Service, outlining the housing instructions for the home to which the student has been assigned. If the student decides to decline the housing arrangements, the student must notify the ORPCE office at Wake AHEC (so the housing can be made available to another student) and the owner of the housing to which he or she has been assigned.

4.  If the Wake AHEC ORPCE cannot provide housing for the student, the following options are available:

bullet

The student can commute to the rotation site. (ORPCE does not reimburse for travel/mileage
expenses.  Students should contact their Course Director for school policies.

bullet

The student can make his/her own arrangements for housing and be reimbursed by ORPCE for
housing expenses at a rate of $11/day upon submission of an itemized receipt. (Travel/mileage
expenses are not included.)

bullet

The student can ask the Course Director to change his/her rotation site.
