Nursing Toolkit

A new program to interest youth in nursing as a career is available to you for purchase through your local AHEC (Area Health Education Center).  These programs were designed by a group of North Carolina professional nurses to introduce students from kindergarten through high school seniors to the career of nursing.  The programs are appropriate for classes or for a career fair.  In the pilot implementation of these programs, elementary students thoroughly enjoyed learning about nursing during the entertaining 30-minute classroom presentation, which included a puppet demonstration and group discussion.  Middle school and high school students also enjoyed the video, display, handouts and group discussion.

Toolkit for Elementary Students (through grade 6):  This program is based on the puppet, Nick, who has an accident on his scooter.  Nick is introduced to nurses in the emergency room, operating room, pediatrics, home care, clinic and school as he proceeds from emergency through recovery.  Two other puppets are involved and represent nurses; one puppet is a dark skinned female and the other is a male, thus representing nursing as a multicultural and gender-neutral profession.  Teachers are given stickers and coloring sheets representing nursing, which can be used as the teacher wishes.

Included in your purchase are the following items:
●  recommended script,
●  three 22” puppets, one dressed in street clothes, one nurse puppet in scrubs and
another nurse puppet in a lab coat
●  stickers*
●  coloring pages*
●  masks
●  stethoscope
●  OR caps
●  OR shoe covers and come complete with a portable carrying case.
The cost is $479, which includes shipping and administrative costs of assembly.

Toolkit for Middle and High School Students:  This program includes a twelve-minute professionally developed video* that was produced and directed by North Carolina Center for Nursing.  Also included are handouts on nursing as a career* in both English and Spanish and the schools of nursing in North Carolina.  A tabletop display and posters* depicting the many choices for nurses is a part of the program.  A script is included which can be used with or without the accompanying audiovisuals (overheads and PowerPoint CD-ROM).  The tabletop display and handouts can also be used at a career fair.  Also included are pencils* and pamphlets* introducing students to the career of nursing.  All materials were designed for ease of use and portability.  The cost is $775, which includes shipping and administrative costs of assembly.

*These items were funded and produced by North Carolina Center for Nursing.  While the products are included in your order, their cost was not included in the price of the Toolkits.  Extra pencils, posters, videos, and pamphlets are available individually or for restocking the Toolkits by calling North Carolina Center for Nursing at 919-715-3523, fax 919-715-3528, or postal address 222 North Person Street, Raleigh, North Carolina 27601.  For more information about the North Carolina Center for Nursing, visit their web site at www.nursenc.org
