Title:  Attachment Theory: Applications to Mental Health Services for Young Children and Families
Description:  Professionals are noting an increase in the number of very young children who exhibit problems such as low frustration tolerance, emotional reactivity, and verbal and physical aggression. An understanding of attachment theory and research can be invaluable in working with these children and their parents or caregivers. This presentation will provide an overview of infant-caregiver attachment and its origin in sensitive care, as well as the various kinds of insecure attachment and related behavioral difficulties. It will explore practical tools, strategies, and interventions for integrating an understanding of attachment issues into working with very young children and their families.

Objectives:  1. Describe the features and benefits of secure attachment and parenting behaviors that promote such attachment.
  2. Implement clinical strategies for assessing parent-child interaction and adult attachment history.
  3. Integrate attachment issues into treatment goals and planned interventions.
  4. List three categories of insecure attachment, related developmental difficulties, and the parenting behaviors associated with each.
