| Title: | Interventions for Problematic Behavior in Schools: An Overview |
| Description: | Basic concepts from psychology’s Behavior Theory have been recognized as useful tools for behavioral intervention in schools for some time. In 1997 the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandated using Functional Behavioral Assessment/Positive Behavioral Intervention for Exceptional Children with problematic behaviors. More recently, public schools in North Carolina have been mandated to use the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support approach to improve social and academic skills for all students. Whether implemented in every classroom or targeted to an individual child, this supportive framework for behavioral intervention requires understanding the principles of behavior management, including how behavior is learned and reinforced. Specific behavior plans require an in-depth analysis of the influences on behavior and the ability to design plans that are highly individualized to the child and situation. As children get older additional factors, including level of their participation, must be considered in selecting and designing interventions. |
