| Title: | HIV Update for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Professionals 2010 |
| Description: | This training will provide up-to-date information in key areas in HIV treatment. The purpose is to improve service to those who are already HIV-infected and to develop insight and expertise into providing effective HIV prevention for those clients who are at risk. The prevention emphasis is on psychosocial and psychological aspects rather than on the specifics of safer sex training. Topics covered include an overview of HIV demographics, with focus on the Southeast, the role of stigma, an update on medical treatment, limits to confidentiality, specific psychiatric diagnostic criteria that indicate high risk of HIV infection, the role of sexuality and acute HIV infection, the emerging information about tobacco and HIV, and finally, the challenges of long-term HIV survival. |

| Objectives: | 1. Discuss challenges for mental health and substance abuse professionals in working with patients in current HIV epidemic with emphasis on stigma and demographics (Southeast). |
| 2. Discuss the challenges of long term HIV survival and some of the treatment issues involved. | |
| 3. Discuss the current state of HIV treatment and the prognosis for those infected. | |
| 4. Discuss the specific diagnostic criteria for a number of mental health disorders and the implications for HIV prevention. | |
| 5. Explain how tobacco use can affect HIV. | |
| 6. Explain the special considerations related to acute HIV infection and implications for prevention work with clients. | |
| 7. Review specific tools for approaching a sexual history with a client. | |
| 8. Review the HIV reporting laws in NC and the implications for mental health and substance abuse clinicians. | |
