Title:  The 20th Annual Art of Breastfeeding Conference: Celebrating the Past, Present and Future of Breastfeeding
Description:  This program is designed to promote breastfeeding by providing up-to-date information and evidence-based strategies for management of breastfeeding and human lactation. The purpose of the workshop is to enhance clinical and leadership knowledge and skills for those working with breastfeeding families.

Audience:  Lactation consultants, nurses, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, health educators, doulas, midwives, breastfeeding support persons, physicians, physician assistants, peer counselors, chiropractors, speech pathologists, public health practitioners and students.

Objectives:  01. Identify ways in which breastfeeding positively impacts the environment.
  02. Describe how an historical perspective can impact your work to improve breastfeeding outcomes in your community.
  03. Describe how the Joint Commission Core Measures on exclusive breast milk feeding will impact lactation support.
  04. Discuss ethical considerations related to individualized lactation support for diverse families.
  05. Examine how SSRI use during pregnancy and during breastfeeding will impact the infant’s neurobehavioral development.
  06. Describe questions to ask to elicit clinical symptoms for effective triaging of various causes of sore breasts.
  07. Discuss pertinent factors to consider when helping a mother assess her milk supply.
  08. Identify foods and herbs that can be safely used to increase milk production.
  09. Discuss the characteristics of the infant who is born preterm and their impact on the baby's ability to learn to breastfeed.
  10. Discuss the unique aspects of adoptive breastfeeding.
  11. Identify strategies for providing breastfeeding support that are compatible with the lifestyles of teen mothers.
  12. Describe updates, innovations and issues in breastfeeding support from the North Carolina WIC program.
  13. Discuss how to identify appropriate grant funding sources and apply for monies for breastfeeding related projects.
  14. Describe the various pathhways of becoming an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
  15. Identify common elements to creating and sustaining a breastfeeding support group in your community.
  16. Identify the possible impact of breastfeeding research projects being conducted through The Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Cancellation Fee
